About

One night, as a teenager, I began to play with my name. I took the initials of my given names and surnames and built my new name: FRAM. I loved the deep sound of that M — like a presence whose echo only makes you aware of it once it is gone, once it is no longer there. And I started signing that way.

Years later I came across another FRAM. It was a ship, built to sail to the North Pole, designed to flow with the currents if it became trapped in the ice; a ship made to enter nature and to ally itself with her. It was built by a Norwegian explorer named Fridjoft Nansen, and he named it FRAM. The name of the ship means FORWARD.

If you ever go to Norway, on the Bigdøy peninsula, you can visit the FRAM museum. On its hull you can see the marks of its journey, the scars left by the fist of ice when it held the ship in its grip in 1982, as it drifted slowly like a compass needle toward its dark polar destiny.

In my dreams sails a ship whose name is me.
